Steyn, Garfield, and 9/11

Today's Mark Steyn column starts off with fascinating look at the death of President Garfield (it took him two and half months to die after being shot) and the reaction of Americans to that event.  He then contrasts that with our reaction to 9/11.  Very astute observations.

"America is now five years on from an even more extraordinary event. How have the private and public sectors responded?"

Voices From The Front V

Please take the time to see what our troops have to say.  Yes, these are a couple of years old, but they will continue right up to the present, and I think you'll see a couple of themes emerge throughout all of these interviews.  All of these men and women, past and present, deserve to have their voices heard.  And, if you have the time at some point, go ahead and drop the Tampa Tribune a line.  They should know that there is an audience for these interviews.  It's easy to slam the MSM when they fall short, which is a nearly constant thing, so when they get something right, we should jump on it with praise.  It's like a seedling.  If you don't nurture it, it's going to die.  Right, then.  That's me stepping off of the soapbox.

Captain Christopher Hormel - 11/13/05

"We've taken so many strides forward, it would be a shame if we threw it all away. If the average American citizen could see the amount of progress being made, I don't think we would have so much opposition. "

Command Sgt. Maj. Cindy Pritchett - 11/20/05

"The thing that gets them down is the good-news part of Afghanistan is not in the news. When you see them at a school opening or helping police build a jail, they really feel they are accomplishing something."

Dem Hunter

It looks like a fellow Floridian is actually taking it to the Dems.  He appears to be proudly partisan and unashamed that he is a Republican.  His name is Adam Putnam.  Check out the story on him in the Tampa Tribune.  Then head on over here, click on "Contact Adam," and tell him to keep up the good work.

Steyn on Iraq

Read Steyn's latest on the war in Iraq.

"To the Slow-Bleed Democrats, it's the Republicans' war. To an increasing number of what my radio pal Hugh Hewitt calls the White-Flag Republicans, it's Bush's war. To everyone else on the planet, it's America's war. And it will be America's defeat."

Heads I Win, Tails You Lose

Here's a post I left on a Thomas Sowell column on the cult of Global Warming:

Just so you know:

If it's a bit hotter than average this time of year, it's because of Global Warming.
If it's a bit cooler than average this time of year, it's because of Global Warming.
If it's about average temperature for this time of year, it's because Global Warming is lulling you into a false sense of security.
If a glacier is shrinking, it's because of Global Warming.
If a glacier is growing, it's because of Global Warming.
If there are more storms (hurricanes) than usual, it's because of Global Warming.
If there are fewer storms than usual, it's because of Global Warming.
If you're having a bad hair day, it's because of Global Warming.
If a scientist says that man has caused Global Warming, she's right, it has.
If a scientist says that man has not caused Global Warming, he's no scientist; he's a paid-for charlatan hack.
If a bit of info seems to point towards man-made Global Warming, it's a fact.
If a bit of info seems to be contrary to man-made Global Warming, it's an opinion, and an unreasoned one at that.
If despite all of this, you are still skeptical, it's because you are Glormophobic.  There's no use saying that you're not afraid of Global Warming, that you just disagree with it; we all know better.
So, there it is.  Next time you're in a park and a bird poops on your favorite statue, you'll know why.
And what about the dirty little secret that everyone knows but doesn't want to talk about?  We all know that A.  A hurricane hit New Orleans because of Global Warming and that B. that same hurricane hit New Orleans because of George Bush.  George Bush is Global Warming.  That evil chimp simply must be stopped!

Steyn (and Fletch) On Global Warming

Given all of the talk about Global Warming, I thought I'd post a few links to some pertinent columns.  The first couple are the latest two columns by Mark Steyn:

What's So Hot About Fickle Science?

Don't Ruin Economy Over Tiny Temp Rise

The next one is a blog post by Fletch:

On Kilimanjaro and Polar Bears

Real good stuff.  Make sure you drop by Fletch's blog and leave a comment.

Mark Steyn

Since Townhall doesn't carry his columns, I've decided to put a link to Mark Steyn's columns when they come out for those who are interested.  I'm going to start with a column from a couple of weeks back.  It's hilarious.  Enjoy:

Old U.S.S.R. Made Old Europe Look New

"Darfur is an apt symbol of early 21st century liberalism: What matters is that you urge action rather than take any."

Tag And Other Stories

Much to my consternation, I've been tagged by Celtic Dragon, and, yes, I'm just getting around to getting this monkey off of my back.  As I've taken so long, everyone I know has already been tagged.  Should be interesting.  Oh, yes, the rules.  Write a post detailing six things about myself that aren’t known and might just show me to be the goof that I am. Tag six other people.  Just don't blame me.  If you need to throw rotten fruit, track down CD.

1. I'm a Tom Jones fan.  Come on, you know you like "What's new Pussycat?" too.

2. I still read and collect comic books (mostly DC with some Marvel and the odd Dark Horse or independent).

3. As a related item, I can recite Green Lantern's oath (those of you who know what I'm talking about, see if you can remember it - answer is at the bottom).

4. I have touched the water of Loch Ness and actually think that's something worthy of writing about.

5. I (and a couple of friends) drank some beers in a university class (the prof was legally blind, but I'm sure that he heard the "pfshht" of the old style pull tops (it was Coors and they were the last to convert from pull tops to pop tops).  Interestingly, or not, it was a sociology class.

6. When I was a teen, I thought I'd be cool and jump out of the back of our pick-up truck, which had just come to a stop.  I was sailing through the air, the epitome of athletic coolness, when the very tip of my right shoe just caught the top edge of the tailgate.  My descent was swift and merciless.  Yep.  Two sets of stitches on that one.  It was the first and last time I tried that ill-fated stunt.

Well.  There it is.  Now, as to the six I'm about to tag, here they are:

Josue

Gregmc

Greg Reeson

And, as longshots (since they're missing in action at the moment):

Scatbug

Husker Jeff

BrianR

Well, there you have it.

Oh yeah.  Green Lantern's oath:

"In brightest day, in blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight;
Let those who worship evil's might
Beware my power -
Green Lantern's light!"

Tony Dungy

Check out this great article on Tony Dungy.  It's an ESPN column by Michael Smith that mostly concerns itself with how Dungy has coped with the loss of his son.  What's interesting is to see what the players and coaches have to say about him.

Voices From The Front IV

To kick off my return, here's two more voices from the front.

Lauren Barker
 - 10/30/05

"From what I've seen, I think it's gone pretty well. The foreign nationals I've spoken to here on base, they seem very, very happy for us to be here. We have the Iraqi air force here that we're training. They're very, very receptive.

I really do think it's going great. I wouldn't recommend pulling out. There have been people, more than I can count, that have lost their lives in support of this war. If we just give up and pull out, then those lives have been lost in vain.

This place would go to ruin if we were to pull out now. They're starting to set up their own government. They're not even on their own feet yet. If we were to take out all of our support, it would go to shambles."

William Hope - 11/6/05

"There's got to be more journalistic responsibility to report the positive things going on. We have TVs on around us all the time where I work. A lot of guys share the feeling I have - there's not enough focus on the positive happening out here.

We're seeing a decrease in infrastructure attacks. Seeing more Iraqis take matters into their own hands against the insurgents, and repelling them in certain villages.

The thing that people need to understand, the average insurgency lasts around nine years. It's not going to be an overnight success. It's going to be a struggle, and you just have to accept that.

The biggest thing I can say to Americans to support us is just to remain patient. A solution to this isn't going to happen overnight."
